January 17, 2005: Request for Repair

Request for Repair and Permission to Enter

Description of Work Required: This is my third request. I still have the old refrigerator and stove – you know the ones, the ones that predate the moon-landing. The refrigerator temperature is erratic and unpredictable and I have to defrost it at least once a month. Even then, the fridge freezes and ruins, besides my food, my insulin – which is very expensive. Such a pity that so many scientists spent so much of their lives inventing insulin for it to be rendered useless by your fridge. This is naturally unacceptable. With the stove, only one element is reliable. This makes cooking anything more complicated than Kraft Dinner – which, it turns out I couldn’t eat anyway because my insulin is ruined – , rather too much work. Please address as soon as possible. Thank you.

Westinghouse — every appliance in my house at one time was made by Westinghouse (can you guess my father worked there). Just seeing the logo brought an instant rush — not just of memories but of nostalgia and a sort of ‘home’ feeling.

Of course, because he worked there our appliances got replaced. Now he’s gone, I, too, exist with a stove with one working burner.

There is a particular shade of blue that is ‘Westinghouse blue’ — couldn’t possibly describe it, but nothing else is that colour. Your ‘W’ isn’t quite the right shade anymore.
