January 19, 2005:
Naked People Not OK
Now when I think of a country of prudes I don’t naturally think, as you might expect, of Mexico.
No, everything I thought I knew about Mexico must be wrong. For a city in Mexico, Villahermosa (beautiful town), has successfully passed a regulation banning indoor nudity. Apparently there had been too many incidents of people just happening to look inside somebody’s house and seeing somebody, oh gasp, in the nude. Well, of course, the city had to put a stop to that. We couldn’t have naked people in their own homes.
And so it might appear that while the town is beautiful, perhaps its citizens aren’t. Naked beautiful people don’t incite laws. Sometimes lawlessness. But not laws. I can only guess that the town is full of, besides prudes with busy eyes and idle hands, naked ugly people.
Still this new law ought to put an end to homeowners marching around in the nude as if they owned the place, their bits on display for anybody with a keen and patient eye to spy.
Of course it complicates things a bit. People will have to shower in their bathing suits. And what if you happen to like sleeping in the buff?
The crime, the crime of being caught naked in your own home, is punishable by 36 hours in prison. Now, I wonder if offenders are strip searched in the local clink?
