January 7, 2005: Charting my Habitat

On my First Day, I declared, among many things that I haven’t done, that I was going to document my habitat. The pleasure, the thrill was in the details.

As with the corner of the soul, there are corners in my small space I barely notice most of the time. The paint peeling on my bathroom door jamb, for example, I was quite surprised to discover a few days ago. I had no idea. Even though I sit five paces away from it for most of the day. So, with my camera, I’m going exploring.

Which makes me a modern day version of Lewis and Clark; instead of exploring the uncharted west, though, I will chart my habitat.

I like houses. When I travel, I take pictures of the homes I stay in. Homes, wherever I’ve slept, have a soul and a personality. I wish I had photographs of my first house. I am trying to resurrect in my mind the orange tattered lounge I used to sit on upside down and the stripy wallpaper and the black and pink quilt I used to hide under to watch Friday night movies. Well, I will start now.

I’m home now and clearly the SuperSlow computers at school are also SuperStupid, because I don’t see any green underlined text from here!

What are the green links to? I’m at school and our SuperSlow Computers won’t link me to them? I was kind of hoping that by clicking on them you would end up with some camera money.

Love the Lewis and Clark metaphor (or Canadian Voyageurs?) — I’m afraid to look at my house too closely. For example, somewhere near my living room drapes there is a thriving colony of ladybugs — because I keep finding them on the floor — or maybe they’re getting in from outside (please). But I’ve searched (somewhat) and I can’t find anything. Time for new drapes.
